Opera of the month: Hamlet

In the 19th century, Shakespeare's works were a source of inspiration for the Romantics. In particular, The Tragic History of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, one of the most famous plays of the English playwright, crossed by the existential questions of the title role - To be or not to be -, the ghost of his murdered father and his cursed love for Ophelia. Alexandre Dumas père was himself fascinated by this drama, and in 1847 he produced a successful adaptation. It is from this version that Michel Carré and Jules Barbier offer to Ambroise Thomas the libretto of Hamlet, the last opera to have been created in the Salle Le Peletier.

Exhibition of the month: 80's

The exhibition is punctuated by three themes that reflect the great telescoping of ideas and forms specific to the decade: a new political and cultural era, the effervescence of design and the look of the 80s. Opening the exhibition in the Tuileries galleries, the election of François Mitterrand in 1981 heralded a decisive change. The poster with the slogan "La force tranquille" by advertising executive Jacques Séguéla, commissioned by Mitterrand opens a new era of global visual communication and signs the arrival of electoral marketing.
